The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in federal court, targets the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
