The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
